Say No To Hair Dye Foam!

Gemma Oliver | Tuesday, January 01, 2013 |

I know many bloggers don't write about things they hate and I'd like to keep my blog positive but every now and again something annoys me so much that I just have to have a little rant. And because more than one brand of the same product has had the same result I felt the need to tell you all about it.

I posted this on my twitter recently;
'Great! That is the last time I EVER use a foam hair dye, absolute rubbish!!!!!!!'
I've been dying my hair since the age of 14 and recently had a 2 year gap where I decided to go back to my natural hair colour, then around 3 months ago I had the urge to dye my hair again. After not browsing the hair dye isles in Boots for a long time I came across ammonia free hair dyes and foam hair dyes. I tried an ammonia free hair dye first, Garnier Olia in 5.0 Brown and had lovely results (which you can see here). It left my hair soft, shiny and generally feeling healthy as well as dying my hair as a hair dye should. Then 4 weeks later curiosity got the better of me again and being the messy pup I am I wanted a mess free hair dye solution, that's when I tried my first foam hair dye. I picked up Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Foam in 5.3 Medium Golden Brown, followed all the instructions and used two boxes of dye as always due to having very thick hair. I loved the application and how soft my hair felt afterwards but it just didn't dye my roots! Bare in mind my natural hair colour is a light red colour (see here) and therefore shouldn't be hard to dye whatsoever as I was dying my roots darker. Disappointed, I left my hair for another 4 weeks not wanting to dye it all over again straight away. I then thought I'd try another foam hair dye, this time going for Clairol's Nice & Easy Colour Blend Foam in 6.5G Lightest Golden Brown. This hair foam also failed to dye my roots and left my hair feeling more unhealthy than Garnier's offerings. So 4 boxes of hair dye later and my roots are still showing. My last attempt at dying my hair with a hair foam was the day before New Years Eve and therefore a big night out. I was left disappointed, a little angry and feeling cheated. I'll never use a foam hair dye again!!

  1. I hate hair dye foams as well! I dyed my hair brown a couple of years ago, used several different dyes and then decided to give the nice and easy foam a try and it was just horrendous, my colour was patchy despite me applying it evenly like I had with every other hair dye (all of which I'd never had a problem with) and worst of all it completely stained my scalp and forehead, it took a good 2 weeks until I got it all off! I think they're just rubbish tbh. Ordinary garnier ones were my favourite :)
    Love Holly x

    1. I wouldn't recommend them at all, they're a waste of money. I definitely like the ammonia free hair dyes they've brought out though! xx
